Handcuffs

Buffy punches buttons on the Doublemeat cash register and thinks about handcuffs.

She watches Xander spin Dawn around the living room, and he and Anya are getting married, with corsages and registries and little name tag things on the tables, and she should be so happy for them, and she thinks about handcuffs.

At the Bronze even Willow dances and Xander buys her drinks, and there are zero slimy ransacking demons to slay, and she’s without obligation. Fancy-free.

And she thinks about handcuffs, and she thinks about their promise: being kept from your life through no fault of your own.

Escapism is definately part of Buffy's mindset here. Does she then see handcuffs as a passive sort of bondage that she's resigned to or is she an active agent in her own escape? You brought up some lovely food for thought with the last line. Well done.
