What Was The First Evil Up To Anyway?

I'm starting to think of more posts that are applicable, plus frenchani just posted about this too, which reminded me.

One of the great mysteries of BTVS is what The First Evil was up to in season 7. The good news is that things become clearer after the second or third viewing of the season, and I personally think I have a handle on The First up until Dirty Girls. The First appears to be a very opportunistic villian, operating on the "Because I can" principle. It's only real goal is Evil; it has no specific desire to open the Hellmouth (I mean, it wants to, but that's not it's singular goal), to destroy Buffy, become a giant snake, create an army of human/demon hybrids, return to its own hell dimension, be a supervillian, or exact vengeance. This makes it a very intriguing villian that can adapt as Buffy fights against it.

I compiled all the references to The First in Amends and season 7 in hopes that it will make things clearer. Here's hoping.
